British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.
The facility, located using surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.
"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of access tunnels leading to the depot... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.
There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.
The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.
"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.
UK warplanes have performed patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.
"I must thank the personnel of British forces involved in this operation for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of a great many British personnel on duty over the holidays. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our security, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."
During December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, after an ambush killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The UN estimates Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
